That project is closer to a thesaurus in the sense that it returns synonyms for a word (or short phrase) query, but it also returns many broadly related words that aren't included in thesauri. I made this tool after working on Related Words which is a very similar tool, except it uses a bunch of algorithms and multiple databases to find similar words to a search query. So in a sense, this tool is a "search engine for words", or a sentence to word converter. It acts a lot like a thesaurus except that it allows you to search with a definition, rather than a single word. The engine has indexed several million definitions so far, and at this stage it's starting to give consistently good results (though it may return weird results sometimes). Synonyms: place, location, locale, locality, spot, point, site, seat, post, station, situation, bearings, whereabouts, geography, setting, area. For example, if you type something like "longing for a time in the past", then the engine will return "nostalgia". It simply looks through tonnes of dictionary definitions and grabs the ones that most closely match your search query. They might ask you “ ça passe? ” and you say “Oui, ça passe large. The way Reverse Dictionary works is pretty simple. ” (yeah it fits perfectly, don’t worry).Īnother way to say this phrase with enthusiasm is to say ça passe large, this might work in a scenario when someone offers to pick a restaurant for you nonchalantly, but then they happen to choose your favourite place. If you want to be more excited about saying ça passe, you can say ça passe crème, which means “it works perfectly,” and it references cream, a substance that is easy to swallow and does not require any chewing.įor instance, you might be trying to park your car and your friend doubts your ability to park your car in the smaller than average spot ahead of you: “ T’es sûr que tu rentres là, dans cette place? ” (Are you sure you can fit into that spot?) and you respond: “ Oui, ça passe crème, t’inquiètes. Looking for more French expressions? See our word of the day section on our website. With time, the meaning evolved and became the one we know today. In the 19th century, poser un lapin meant leaving without paying for the favours of a woman, according to French author Georges Planelles in his book The 1001 favourite expressions of the French. The choice of word rabbit goes back to ancient times when this animal was synonym of abundance. Je n’y crois pas, c’est la troisième fois qu’on essaye d’aller au cinéma cette semaine, mais à chaque fois il me pose un lapin! I can’t believe it, this is the third time that we tried going to the movies this week but each time he’s stood me up. J’avais rendez-vous avec une fille que j’ai rencontré sur une appli de rencontre mais elle m’a posé un lapin! I was meant to go on a date with a girl I met on a dating site but she stood me up! The equivalent expression in English would be to stand someone up. Poser un lapin literally means to ‘put down a rabbit’ but the expression has nothing to do with the furry animal but more with the action of not showing up to a meeting without telling anyone. If you often leave your friends hanging, then don't be surprised if the next time you see them, they ask you why you poser un lapin.
